Discovery Bay by Matt McKiernan
“One of my favorite things about Discovery Bay
is that you can easily get there by boat.”
It's hard 'to say what my absolute favorite establishment is on the Coast. After all, with all of the great local joints it's truly hard to pick just one. I have several haunts that I love, and they tend to be places with unique atmospheres, great food and cold beer. We are very lucky to have a plethora of choices that have all three. I, unfortunately, must pick one. After some intense deliberation (and some cold libations) I have to say that Pepper's Discovery Bay Marina & Resort is the most unique.
Established almost 19 years ago by Jack Waldrip and his father, Phil Pepper, Discovery Bay is one .of those places you simply cannot forget. Located just north of Highway 90 in Pass Christian, Discovery Bay is the type of place you'd bring someone to offer them an authentic slice of life on the Coast. Great food, cold beer, and on the water . . . . . what more can you ask for? How about a boat launch, 60 slips, dock space for boat traffic, and a swimming pool!
Discovery Bay offers a wide variety of excellent eats, from fresh seafood (fried, grilled or steamed), great hamburgers, and everything in between.
Special offerings include the Friday Night Dinner Special and the Sunday Seafood Boils. All the seafood is local and as fresh as can be, always served with a smile and priced right.
One of my favorite things about Discovery Bay is that you can easily get there by boat. Located just a minute northeast from the Bayou Portage Bridge, the Marina has 250 new feet of mooring space. It's a perfect place to take a break, whether to eat some food or grab a cold beer. They have a large, outside deck overlooking the water and plenty of space to walk around. Children are welcome at Discovery Bay, so make sure to bring your kids. The weekends in particular are very family oriented.
It has amazed me over the years how many Coast natives have not yet discovered this gem of a bar and restaurant. I guess that it serves to remind all of us how great it is, and how blessed we are to have so many choices. To top it off, we have the privilege to be outside with our friends and families enjoying everything Mother Nature has to offer. I suggest that you think about that over a beer and a burger at Discovery Bay. For info call 228-452-9441.
